Dennis had a cul-de-sac lot near Old Settlers Park and a 14 ft single leaf, and a long leaf had to open uphill on a driveway with a slight crown near the street.

Hank's storage property off I-35 near La Frontera was the fire-lane case: a gate across a fire lane had to meet the Round Rock Fire Marshal's guideline for controlled gates.

Phoebe's older home near Old Town got a custom pedestrian entry gate, because the front walk had no gate, and the old fence had pulled away from the stone post.

Roy's acreage tract off US 183 was the remote case: the entry sat far from the house, with no power at the road and a trailer turning in every week.

Swing, Sliding or Cantilever for Your Drive

A swing gate fits when the leaf has room to open, a slide fits when it does not, and a cantilever suits a slope or a busy lane.

Gate typeSpace it needsBest fit
Swing, single or dualA clear arc inside or outside the propertyA level or gently rising drive with room to open
Ground-track slidingA straight run along the fence line, plus a poured trackA level opening with no room to swing
Trackless cantileverA counterbalanced run behind the opening and nothing on the groundSlopes, gravel and busy commercial lanes

Marshall's narrow side-entry lot in Leander needed a slide, because a garage sat too close to the street for any swing leaf to clear a parked car. Our sliding and rolling gates and automatic driveway gates pages go through each style in turn.

Gates for Acreage and Large-Lot Drives

An acreage drive needs a wider opening and either a long power run or a solar operator. Arlo's tract past Lake Georgetown sat well past the end of the power line, so a 30W panel and a deep-cycle battery beat trenching, and the gate still opens by hand from the release if the battery fails. Our ranch and acreage entry gates and solar gate operators pages cover the sizing.

Blackland and Limey Loam: What the Ground Means for Gate Posts

Williamson County has two kinds of ground, and we check which one your drive sits on before we mark a post hole. The Balcones Escarpment divides the county, with dark loamy and clayey blackland soils to the east and light to dark loamy soils over limey subsoil to the west. On every job, grade is shot across the full swing or slide path, and bottom rail clearance is set from that measurement, so the soil and the slope are both written into the scope before any hole is dug.

Fire Lanes, HOA Rules and Permits for Gates in Round Rock

The Round Rock Fire Marshal's July 2023 Emergency Access Controlled Gate Systems Guidelines are the rule for gates across fire lanes. They call for a Knox key switch about 5.5 ft up that bypasses the keypad, an Opticom receiver 8 to 10 ft up on the property side, a gate that opens freely or by hand release on power loss, a clear opening no narrower than the 20 or 26 ft fire lane, UL 325 and ASTM F2200 construction, and a Fire Marshal acceptance test. The guideline speaks of fire lanes, so we treat it as the rule for those gates and confirm with the city before applying it to anything else.

Round Rock requires no building permit for a residential fence, though a Historic Overlay lot needs a Certificate of Appropriateness first, and a 2016 ordinance limits the lean of a street-facing fence over 4 ft to 1 ft. Texas SB 711, effective September 1, 2025, lets an HOA require a driveway gate set back 10 ft where the driveway meets a laned road, with fences built before that date excepted. Flat-top rails and brown or bronze finishes are stocked for neighborhoods whose design rules bar spear points or black, so the covenant review goes smoothly before we draw the gate.

Why Gate Automation Is Not a DIY Job

A powered gate is a crush hazard, so we set up monitored photo eyes and edge sensors and test each one before handover. Kendra's older opener off US 79 had no working eyes and a child's bike had been struck in the drive, so we replaced the arm and added monitored eyes on both sides. Our gate operator installation team adds working eyes and edges to an older opener and proves it reverses.

Gate Materials We Fabricate

Steel is our default for strength and stiffness, aluminum is the choice where rust is the worry, and forged iron carries a front line. Rudy's steep shared drive in The Hills went to 11-gauge steel over aluminum for the stiffness, while a pool fence goes aluminum. Related Gate and Iron Services

Owners often pair a new gate with gate access control, which adds video intercom, keypad or phone entry to the post, or a pedestrian entry gate. How a job runs

From the First Walk to the Final Safety Test

  1. Walk the site

We read the grade, the soil and the swing or slide path before a line is drawn.

  2. Drawing sign-off

You sign off on a scaled drawing, the metal, the finish and the operator before any steel is cut.

  3. Build in the shop

Our welders fabricate the gate, then it goes out for its coating before it comes to your property.

  4. Hang and test

We set the posts, hang the leaf, wire the operator and run every photo eye and safety edge in front of you.
